April 10, 1970

The break-up hits the press - and the public.
The Daily Mirror headline on April 10, 1970:

Along with the release of Paul's first solo album, McCartney, came a questionnaire-style interview, in which one of the questions resulted in the press perhaps reading a bit more into it than originally intended...
Q: Are you planning a new album or single with The Beatles?
Paul: No.
That "no" was apparently taken as a "the band broke up" and splashed across the news.

Derek Taylor released one last press statement on behalf of the Beatles, reading:
Spring is here and Leeds play Chelsea tomorrow and Ringo and John and George and Paul are alive and well and full of hope. The world is still spinning and so are we and so are you. When the spinning stops - that'll be the time to worry. Until then, The Beatles are alive and well and the Beat goes on, the Beat goes on.

Right from the start, the rumors and questions began - when will the band get together again?
In response, the following was released on August 29, 1970, in the Melody Maker:
Dear Mailbag,
In order to put out of its misery the limping dog of a news story which has been dragging itself across your pages for the past year, my answer to the question, "will the Beatles get together again"... is no.
Paul McCartney.

Placing the blame seemed easy, as Ringo clarified in 1981:
Yoko's taken a lot of shit, her and Linda; but The Beatles break-up wasn't their fault. It was just that suddenly we were all thirty and married and changed. We couldn't carry on that life anymore.

I think being [a Beatle] was much more difficult. I mean, it was fun for a long time, but there was so much pressure on us. It became really tiresome and it was good, in a way, to dissipate that energy that there was with the four of us together. You know, let it go away so that we could have some semblance of a life. Otherwise it would have just been madness continually.
- George, 1988

The silliness goes on without us. - Ringo, 1974

As a band, the Beatles probably achieved more in the amount of time they were together than most musical artists could hope to achieve in a lifetime. For all the mess you've probably all read about in various biographies, I feel it's just important to point out that, no matter what, the music was always the pivotal factor... it's what remains, and always will... and still amazes after all these years.
